T.J. came to us in the summer of 2007 through a friend of his inviting him to help serve in the kitchen. He spent time volunteering with the dinner meal and soon came back on a regular basis. “Serving at the Mission gave me an opportunity to do good in the face of so much tragedy, pain and hunger that I saw in so many people.” He was surprised at the great variety of people needing the help of the Mission. T.J. found while talking with the homeless that some had lived what he considered normal lives with an education, families and jobs, but they had some point of departure, some fork in the road of their lives that rendered them homeless. T.J. goes on to say, “Some I would never have guessed that they were homeless. I learned fairly quickly with volunteering at the Mission that anyone can become homeless.”
“Service has a snowball effect,” T.J. says. “Part of having a servant’s heart is growth and a better understanding of Christ through serving others.” Volunteering for our special events and other activities, T.J. has become an asset here at the Mission. Vicki Whitby, Development Coordinator, says, “I was blessed to have T.J. volunteer to work one of our coin box routes. This opened the door for me to ask him to help with our Bridge of Hope Banquet. Not only did he help, but he engaged some of his friends also. What a blessing they all were! It has been a pleasure to get to know T.J. All I have to do is mention something I am working on, and he comes up with a way to help. He is involved in numerous ministry outreach activities and is so “on-fire for God!" I honestly do not know how he can be involved in all that he is and accomplish all that he does! This world could use a lot more T.J.’s!”
Thank you, T.J.! Christ taught the importance of having a servant’s heart when he washed his disciples’ feet. Our volunteers show us daily that they are walking examples of Christ’s message.
