The Albuquerque Rescue Mission provides many effective programs which serve as a source of help to many men, women and children in the Albuquerque area. However, there is another kind of help without which all of the most effective programs in the world are useless. Of course, our programs will bring a great measure of assistance to those who apply themselves. But the only help that will have a lasting impact is that which comes from God.

Jesus said, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” That's why everything we do is centrally focused on Him. Ultimately, it is only God's help that can produce enduring change.

How to get it

Everyone is fond of saying, “God helps those who help themselves.” Nothing could be farther from the truth. God helps those who realize they need His help! The first step in obtaining help from God is to humbly admit that you need it.

But then comes the problem. The Bible says that all have sinned, and that the consequence of sin is eternal separation from God. How can we whose sin has separated us from God ever hope to approach Him? How can we be confident enough to come to God for help when we don't know if He will accept us?

The answer is in the Bible: “The wages (consequence) of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” In our criminal justice system, we say that the one convicted of a crime must “pay his debt” to society. Justice demands that payment be made. In the case of our own “crimes” against God, the same is true. But God loves us to the point that He is unwilling for us to endure the unspeakable misery of eternity without Him. Instead, He sent His Son, Jesus, to take upon Himself the punishment for our sins. Jesus completely satisfied God's demand for justice by sacrificing Himself in our place.

But we must be willing!

It becomes a matter of trust. The payment has been made. The gift has been offered. Anyone who puts his trust in Jesus as Savior and submits to Him as Lord receives the forgiveness of sins provided for by His death on the cross and gains God's acceptance based, not on any merit of his own, but on the merit of Jesus' sacrifice.

What now?

Ask yourself one question: If today was your last day on earth, do you have the confidence that you would be accepted by God into heaven? If not, you can gain that confidence now!

This is what you must do:

Admit to yourself, and then to God that you are guilty before Him.

Trust in Jesus as the One who has purchased forgiveness for your sins with His own blood.

Thank God for accepting you as one of His children.

You can pray a prayer like this:

“Father, I know that I’ve sinned against you, that my sin separates me from you, and that you love me and want me to be restored to relationship with you. I now trust in You, Jesus, for the forgiveness of my sins because of your death and sacrifice on the cross and Your blood shed for me. Thank you for saving me, for accepting me into your family, and for making the way for me to spend eternity with you.”

The Bible says, “...as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God...” And again, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

If you have just received Jesus into your life as your Lord and Savior, or if you have any questions about what the Bible says, we'd love to hear from you.
